The Dungeness crab is native to the Northeastern Pacific, from Alaska down to Magdalena Bay, Mexico. The Dungeness crab is the official crustacean of The State of Oregon & State of California (although an elementary class from West Linn, OR spearheaded Oregon’s adaptation first)
The majestic Dungeness can be found in bays, estuaries, & the nearshore coast. They prefer a sandy bottom. Now you don’t hear that too often! Fisherman often grumble & growl about throwing females of eligible size back. Males that are 6.25 inches or greater across the carapace are the only legal size crabs to take home to your rolling boil.
If you are not into toiling in the bay for hours, your in luck as there is an easy route to enjoy the deliciousness of the Dungeness. Just head to the Dungeness Crab Festival held annually each October in Port Angeles, WA to get your fill!
